EN-STI Group: Sources, Targets & Interactions

The Sources, Targets and Interactions Group will have as common ground the study of beam interactions with matter, aiming to apply its know-how to particle generation (ISOLDE Radioactive beam sources, CLIC photoinjectors and polarized e+ e- sources), and to particle interception (collimators, absorbers and dumps). The Group is in charge of the conceptual design, production, operation and maintenance of devices in the LHC injectors and the LHC machine (sources, targets, collimators, dumps etc…) as well as in the secondary beams. The group is responsible for developing and maintaining the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and for providing formal training and support to its users in the accelerator community and to the experiments worldwide. The group hosts the nTOF users and is a member of the collaboration, participating to the nTOF experiments to include the experimental data in the cross-section databases for FLUKA. Maintains a top level expertise and promotes studies in neutronics and neutron based systems (spallation targets, ADS etc.).
The group is formed of five sections:

ECE: Equipment Controls and Electronics

This section is responsible for the operation of low level controls and equipment instrumentation (motors, sensors etc…) for all the equipment under the group’s responsibility. Writes and maintains all the FESA classes and expert application programs for accelerator operation, develops radiation-hard motors and sensors, precision electronics compatible with long cables and with high immunity to Electromagnetic Interference. Develops and maintains high voltage fast (~psec) switching electronics and fast acquisitions for use with the RILIS and CTF3 lasers.The section provides design and technical support for the RADMON hardware and software. The section provides first-line contact for interventions on the objects in the accelerators.

EET: Emerging Energy Technologies

The section coordinates the FLUKA team and is in charge of the FLUKA code development, maintenance and support. Provides studies on energy deposition, beam interaction with machine elements and FLUKA simulations for the accelerators and different applications (i.e. medical). Participates to the conceptual design of machine components, in collaboration with the other sections of the group. Participates in the nTOF experiment. Coordinates the Single Event Upset task force (R2E) and radiation tests to electronics for the accelerator community, and supports the accelerator equipment groups in the interpretation of the test results.

LP: Lasers and photocathodes

The section is in charge of laser based particle sources, in particular the RILIS (Resonance Ionisation Laser Ion Source) and the photoinjectors of CTF3. It maintains a high-level know-how on high power pulsed lasers, and on development of photocathodes for high charge and high brightness photoinjectors. The section participates to the international effort to develop a polarized positron source for the CLIC study. It also participates to european and international networks for R&D on new materials and laser technology for applications to particle sources.

RBS: Radioactive Beams Sources

The section is responsible for providing the targets for the generation of radioactive ion beams for the ISOLDE facility. It maintains the technical competence on low (~3 kW) and medium (~100 kW) power targets for ISOLDE and the High intensity upgrade of ISOLDE, and provides the scientific know-how for the development of new solid and liquid targets and ion sources. It is responsible for the technical coordination of the ISOLDE experimental area, for the AD target area and hosts the HIE-ISOLDE Project leader.

TCD: Targets, Collimators and Dumps

The section is in charge of all the beam intercepting devices in the CERN accelerators and secondary beam lines. The section provides know-how for the conceptual design, operation and maintenance of the mechanical part of the objects, and develops the necessary mechatronics in collaboration with the ECE section. The section carries out expert interventions in the tunnel in case of mechanical failure of the objects. The section is also responsible for studies on High-energy (~MWs) targets for future facilities (Eurisol, ESS etc.) and maintains the expertise in the field of structural material behavior under extreme conditions (liquid metal targets, jets, sprays, etc…).
